Identification of the Barracuda

The Barracuda is a large fish with a cylindrical body and an elongated head. This fish has a set of prominent razor sharp teeth. The body colour is a steely grey with the sides and belly being closer to silver. Dark lateral blotches are visible on the sides towards the tail of the fish. The Barracuda can grow to a length of about 1.8 metres with the weight being 20 kilograms, average weight of the species caught ranges between 3 and 7 kilograms.

Distribution of this fish

In South Africa Barracuda are found in the waters of Kwa Zulu Natal, North of Durban and into Mozambique.

These fish are usually caught while trolling for other species.

Live bait works best with artlure such as surface or sub surface lures being the best.

Tackle to use when fishing for Barracuda

Medium to heavy boat rods with a good quality reel and wire trace or thick nylon traces are recommended.
